Science
Foundation Stage: Science in the Foundation Stage is covered through the “Understanding of the World” area of the EYFS curriculum. It is introduced indirectly through activities which encourage children to explore, observe, problem solve and talk about the world around them
Children will explore creatures, people and plants in their natural environments. They will observe and manipulate objects and materials to identify similarities and differences. They will be encouraged to ask questions about why things happen and how things work.
KS1 (Year 1/2): In Key Stage 1, children will learn to answer questions and also realise that questions can be answered in different ways, They will use simple equipment and learn how to observe closely. Children will carry out simple tests and learn to classify and identify. They will gather information and begin to record their findings in a range of ways. The focus is to encourage children to look more closely at the natural and humanly- constructed world around them.
KS2 (Years 3-6): In Key Stage 2, pupils will learn to ask relevant and thoughtful questions. They will plan and carry out scientific enquiries to investigate these questions, including setting up comparative and fair tests. Children will take accurate measurements using a variety of equipment and use their results to draw conclusions and make predictions. Throughout KS2, pupils will develop a broader scientific understanding of the world around them. In Upper Key Stage 2, they will begin to explore more abstract scientific concepts and ideas.
