Music
Our Music curriculum focuses on performing, composing and listening. Children get to explore both the history of music and also the inter-related dimensions of music: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, texture, structure, timbre.
Foundation Stage: In Early Years we follow the Charanga music scheme. Children have the opportunity to:
· Explore how they can use their voice, bodies and instruments to make sounds.
· Learn about the music from a range of cultural and religious celebrations.
· Create simple actions to well-known songs, learning how to move to a beat.
· Move to music with instruction, changing movements to match the tempo, pitch or dynamics.
KS1 (Year 1/2): Following the Charanga music scheme in KS1, children will:
· Explore the concept of keeping a steady pulse.
· Look at the connections between music, sounds and the environment.
· Use voices, bodies and instruments to respond to different types of music.
· Identify high and low notes and use this knowledge to compose simple tunes
· Learn to interpret musical symbols
· Listen to and appraise a range of music genres such as classical, pop, hip hop and reggae.
· Play tuned percussion instruments
KS2 (Year 3,4,5,6): In KS2, children will:
· Explore different genres of music and discuss their preferences.
· Develop their singing technique
· Create original compositions
· Identifying the pitch and rhythm of written notes and experimenting with notating their compositions.
At Cottingham, children are offered Music lessons in guitar, piano, singing and drums which is provided by ISM, a local music academy providing high-quality lessons. The pupils achievements are then celebrated with a whole school concert which parents are invited to also.
