Art

Foundation Stage:  In EYFS, children develop their skills in drawing and painting. They have the opportunity to design things before they create them and spend time generating ideas. Children explore some artists such as Kandinsky and talk about their work. Our ‘Creation Station’ offers continuous access for children to explore their creative side through painting, drawing, junk modelling and much more.

KS1 and KS2 ( Years 1-6):  In KS1 and KS2 we want our children to enjoy being creative and to produce work they can be proud of. To achieve this, the children are taught a set of skills in drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. Beginning in Year 1 and continuing through to Year 6, children are taught to use a variety of pencil marks to show texture, light and shade. In addition, Key Stage 2 children are taught to use perspective and proportion. Children are taught skills in painting, such as mixing their own paints, learning to mix a range of colours, and using a variety of brush strokes and shades to create texture and depth.

Themes in Art may be based on the class learning journey or on the work of famous artists. The children also experience a range of activities such as textiles, mask making, collage, batik, papier-mâché and weaving.

We celebrate the creativity of children at Cottingham by holding Art exhibitions, competitions and exhibiting Art at the local Rooftop Arts Centre.
